The power of education: St. James goes global to Tanzania

Since 2016, St. James the Great Episcopal Church has helped support an extraordinary mission in Tanzania centered on one powerful belief: education can transform lives.

In the Maasai communities of Tanzania, education is doing more than opening classroom doors — it is creating new futures for children, families, and entire villages. As one Maasai elder shared, “Our money is now in our children and their education. They are the future of the Maasai.”

Through partnerships, donations, and ongoing community support, St. James has helped contribute to schools including Endupoto Primary School, Oljoro Secondary School, Losinyai Primary School, and Osajilo Nursery School. The impact can be seen not only in classrooms and school buildings, but in the lives of students whose opportunities continue to grow through education.

The mission has supported projects ranging from classroom renovations and teacher housing to nutritious meal programs, school uniforms, supplies, infrastructure improvements, and laptops. Recent efforts have included providing food and supplies for orphans, planting hundreds of trees, renovating classrooms, and helping schools prepare future computer labs and expanded educational resources.

The stories behind the mission are especially moving. Students who once attended Endupoto Primary School are now graduating with diplomas, attending medical school, and even returning to teaching in their communities. One young Maasai girl named Stella grew from a student at Endupoto into a teacher serving the next generation of children.

But beyond education itself, the mission reflects something even deeper: relationship, compassion, and hope. The work extends beyond classrooms into healthcare, nourishment, mentorship, and community care—supporting not only students, but entire families and villages.

For nearly a decade, much of this connection has been made possible through the dedication of Cheryl Kyle, a member of St. James the Great who has faithfully helped support and sustain this mission since 2016. Through years of continued involvement, relationship-building, and hands-on service, she has served as a bridge between St. James and the Maasai communities of Tanzania—helping transform compassion into lasting impact.

At St. James, global outreach is not simply about charity — it is about partnership, dignity, and investing in human potential.

Through the power of education, lives continue to be changed for generations to come.
