Have you ever sat in the pew on a Sunday morning, watching everything unfold at the altar, and thought, “I’d love to be part of that”? If you’re 10 years old or older, you don’t have to wait. The St. James Acolyte Team is looking for enthusiastic young people—and adults—who would like to serve in worship. It’s a meaningful way to grow in faith, make new friends, and play an important role in our Sunday services.
What even is an acolyte?
It sounds like a super fancy word, but acolyte comes from an ancient Greek word that basically means “companion” or “follower.” That’s the heart of it: you aren’t just watching the service unfold; you’re right there alongside the clergy, helping guide the whole community through worship.
What’s the vibe? (And what do you actually do?)
Being an acolyte is that sweet spot where having fun meets stepping into a real, meaningful responsibility. You get to wear robes, wear our coolest custom logo Vans shoes, learn the cool behind-the-scenes traditions of the church, and work closely with a great group of people.
When you’re on duty for Sunday services or big holy days like Christmas Eve and Easter, you’ll:
- Lead the procession into the church with the cross and torches.
- Help prepare the altar
- Guide people to communion
- Handle the thurible (the smokey thing)

Never done anything like this before? No stress at all. We train you on everything you need to know, and you’ll be placed on a comfortable, regular rotation that works with your schedule.
Serving at the altar is an amazing way to build confidence, try something new, and make your faith active and real.
