True leadership is often revealed in moments that require courage, compassion, and a willingness to serve beyond one’s comfort zone. For the Rev. Canon Cindy Evans Voorhees, those moments have extended far beyond the walls of St. James the Great Episcopal Church in Newport Beach, California.
In a meaningful and well-deserved recognition, Rev. Cindy was honored as a “Spiritual Diplomat” during the 20th American-Ukrainian Fellowship Gathering in Washington, D.C.—a distinction that reflects her unwavering commitment to supporting the Ukrainian community during a time of crisis.
This recognition is deeply rooted in action. In both 2022 and 2025, Rev. Cindy traveled to Ukraine as a chaplain, including areas near the front lines, to offer spiritual care, encouragement, and hope to those directly impacted by the war. In environments marked by uncertainty and hardship, her presence became a source of strength—reminding individuals that they were not alone.
Her dedication has also created meaningful connections back home. In November 2024, the Ukrainian Cultural Forces performed in Washington, D.C., including at the U.S. Capitol, as part of their U.S. tour. St. James was honored to be one of their selected stops, hosting a special and deeply moving performance for the community.
These remarkable artists—once professional musicians—are now active-duty soldiers and frontline volunteers. Through their music, ranging from Ukrainian classics to contemporary pieces, they uplift fellow troops on the front lines and in recovery. Many have courageously returned to their craft after facing some of the war’s most difficult battles.
Their powerful performances, including a moving rendition of “God Bless the U.S.A.,” brought a sense of unity, hope, and inspiration to all who attended. It was more than a concert—it was a living testimony of resilience, faith, and the unifying power of music.
Her work reflects a broader calling: to bring faith into places where it is needed most. It is a form of ministry that goes beyond words, meeting people in their reality and offering compassion in its most human form.
